Business Blogging Tips
If you’re new to business blogging, read our top 10 tips below for useful advice on what you should and shouldn’t be doing.
- Don’t blog for the sake of it
If you want people to come back time and time again to read your blog then you’ll need to populate it with interesting and relevant content, don’t feel you have to blog just for the sake of it.
- Remember it’s a business blog
It’s important to keep your blog professional at all times. This doesn’t mean you can’t use humour or your personality in your postings, but be careful not to overstep the mark and make comments about any personal issues or write anything about your beliefs that could alienate people.
- Make your blog posts easy to read
People who read your blog will want it to be like your other web pages i.e. easy to scan and pick up key information without having to wade through massive chunks of text.
- Use a bit of humour and personality
Business blogs don’t have to be boring and you should add humour and personality into your postings without using an over familiar tone. If you’re putting your own name to your blog then you’ll want people to have a good impression of you and feel like they’re someone they would like to do business with.
- Monitor any comments carefully
Unless your company sells Viagra online it’s unlikely people will want to read about it, so make sure you have a facility to monitor any comments made about your blog postings so you don’t end up with lots of spam that could drive people away.
Don’t switch the comments option off completely though as it’s good to have relevant feedback on what you’ve written about and this also gives you the chance to interact directly with readers of your blog.
- Start as you mean to go on
Many small business blogs start off in a blaze of glory with regular postings every week only to dry up when other things take priority.
If you’ve built up a bit of a following then your readers will soon get fed up if they keep checking back and your blog has not been updated for weeks.
- Don’t use your blog to blatantly advertise
A common mistake when writing for a business blog is to use it to try and sell directly. It’s best to leave that job to your main website pages and use your blog to comment on relevant issues and give general advice.
- Double check your blog posts before adding them to your website
Spelling mistakes are a turn off whether they’re on your blog or your main website. Don’t rely 100% on an automated spell checker, ask someone else to look over your work to see it they can spot any errors before you make your blog postings live online.
- Don’t forget about functionality
Your blog should be easy to navigate and categorised so that people can quickly find the post or topics they’re looking for.
- Add an author profile
If you’re putting someone’s name to your blog then it’s also a good idea to create an author profile so that people can read about your level of experience and generally get some background information on who you are and your role within the company.
