When Blog Commenting Goes Wrong

How to alienate people through blog comments

Leaving comments on other people’s blogs can benefit your website in terms of incoming links and increased traffic.

In this article I’ll look at some of the common personas in the world of blog commenting so you can learn how to avoid losing friends and alienating people.

The three word wonder

Three word wonderThe three word wonder is sometimes a spammer and sometimes just a person who can’t be bothered contributing anything meaningful.

“Nice post – thanks” are the classic three words used by this type of blog commentator.

The blue pill brigade

Blue pillsThe internet seems to still be full of people peddling little blue pills and posting links to dodgy sites where you can buy it as blog comments.

There are ways to stop this particularly annoying type of contributor – if your blog is on WordPress you can use the G.A.S.P. plug-in.

The off-topic trasher

Trashy Blog CommentsThis blog persona always has a lot to say but the trouble is it usually goes off-topic very quickly and ruins the fluidity and relevance of the other comments people have left.

These types also have an uncanny way of somehow turning your blog topic round to being about them – I bet you never guessed your article on pay per click advertising could turn into a 300 word comment on first time buyer mortgages!

The low-cost link builder

Low cost link builderSometimes the low-cost link builder becomes a three word wonder but often they just type a line or two of gibberish and put in a very blatant link to a third party website.

The low-cost link builder is also known to inhabit business forums and well as company blogs.

The angry for no good reason

Angry Blog CommentsPeople get angry all the time and when it comes to blog comments, it seems often without good reason.

It’s always great to get comments on your blog posts and generate some discussion but a tirade of expletives or a personal attack is not really what you’re after.

Picking fights with you or other people who’ve made comments just for the fun of it may be amusing to this curious beast but not to serious bloggers.
