Using Social Media to Recruit

Recruiting for your small business can be a real headache or you can take a more hands-on approach and use social media to find your new employees.

If you do decide to go down this route, make sure you comply with all the relevant legislation that applies to offline recruitment advertising.

Below are four benefits of using social media sites such as Twitter to look for suitable candidates for your company.

Cast your net far and wide

Social media sites have an amazing worldwide reach so whether you’re looking for a full-time employee or an overseas software developer on a short-term contract, you can cast your recruitment net much wider than say using a local recruitment agency.

Get an idea of what a candidate is really like

If you ask people to express an interest in your position through LinkedIn or Twitter you will be able to gain a valuable insight into what that person’s like by looking at their profile/tweets.

Using social media in this way for recruitment is becoming more and more common. Research by various bodies has shown that approximately 75% of people have admitted to Googling someone’s name for business purposes, so this is also something you should do as a potential employer.

Someone might know someone who knows someone

The great thing about sites like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn is the fact it’s easy for things to be shared with others. Someone in your social network may have a contact/friend or relative who fits the profile of who you’re looking for.

It may just take a simple retweet for you to find the ideal candidate for your opening.

Use a video to describe your company and the person you’re looking for

You could also use YouTube to get the word out that you’re hiring. For example, you may want to record a short video giving some information about your company, the role you’re recruiting for and what skills and experience are needed.

Embedding this video onto your homepage during the recruitment process as well as having it on YouTube should lead to a good response from suitable candidates.

  3. Hi There,

This is a good article, I really like it and I’m in agreement with the theory, but other then adding a video Ive tried most of the above. I have in the past and currently Tweeted and Facebooked our vacancies for our company http://www.vli.co.uk but we never get anything from it. I think this is down to the fact were still building followers, but then I also think my Tweets get lost in the feed within seconds.

I am in agreement that social media is a very powerful tool and could be great for recruiting but for now its seems that I’m not getting that far with it..But a battle I’m aiming to win!

  4. Hi Naomi, thanks for your comments and your RT on Twitter today. You’re right, tweets can get lost in a matter of seconds so it’s always worthwhile being persistent and retweeting important posts like job vacancies at regular intervals. You could also try TwitJobSearch to give your vacancy more exposure.

  5. Thanks for that Jamie I will check it out.
