Selling on eBay is the way many beginners start out on the road to a fully fledged e-commerce website.
Whether you’re looking to test the market for some products you’ve started making or have some stock you want to sell for a profit, there are a number of things you can do to make your items stand out.
Keep reading to discover my simple six step process for improving your eBay sales figures.
- Set up your own eBay shop
Rather than selling as in individual, give yourself more of a presence by having your very own eBay shop.
This is great if you’re making your own items as people will be able to view your entire collection at a glance.
It’s becoming harder to stand out on eBay in terms of your products due to its massive global popularity. However, if you’ve made your own hand-crafted jewellery for example, your style may make people sit up and take notice, but it’s not enough on its own.
- High quality images
High quality images are a must when selling your products on eBay. If you take a few shaky images of your items, people will automatically become more suspicious and may think you’re trying to hide something.
- Captivating headlines and descriptions
One of the ways to get your items noticed on eBay is to put a bit of extra effort into your headlines and descriptions.
For example, you could make your stand out by making it humorous which will help to connect with people on an emotional level.
- Choice of payment and delivery methods
One particular method of delivery or payment may suit you, but remember you’re not the one buying your eBay items.
Give people a choice and you’ll be removing another potential barrier to online sales. Payment methods should include cheques and PayPal and for delivery you may want to offer this as standard or signed for to create more trust with your buyers.
- Pricing
Anything you sell on eBay is only worth what someone’s willing to pay. You need to do a lot of research into what the same or similar items are already selling for before setting a realistic price for your products.
If you go too high or too low, your sales may suffer as a result.
- Terms & conditions
Your terms and conditions should be all about gaining trust.
You should have a clear returns policy and also give information on what happens if goods get damaged in transit or the buyer has a complaint about the condition of the product they’ve bought.
If you’re new to the world of e-commerce, eBay is a fantastic way to dip your toe in the water.
Do you have any other tips for selling on eBay or did you start on eBay and now have a successful e-commerce website? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

Spot on my friend, hand-crafted is the way to go these days, most mass-produced merchandise is way over saturated at this point.

Thanks Dennis, I think there are so many established power sellers on eBay these days it’s practically impossible to start from scratch and make a good living from it. Creating a bespoke shop selling your own products is a great way to stand out. Have a good day!
I’ve actually had thoughts of an auction site myself for as long time..something specifically for the smaller guy.

Sounds like a good idea to me Dennis, I’m all for promoting small businesses online.
I meant the smaller auction seller…not power-sellers that eBay and others cater too apologetically.
Actually, I guess you could call that small businesses also, if they were businesses.
