There’s been a huge buzz about content marketing for some time now and already this year I’ve dozens of blog posts about it.

Keep reading to find out what content marketing is and its one big problem…

What is content marketing?

The name really says it all. It’s the process of marketing your content (videos, blog posts etc.) online to raise your profile and boost your search engine rankings.

With so much content being created every single day on the web, you can’t afford to sit back and just wait for people to discover yours. You need to be proactive.

So, what’s the big problem?

The major problem with content marketing is the quality of content. More than ever it’s essential to create content that stands out for all the right reasons.

Think about it; why would people take time out of their busy days to share sub-standard or average content? It won’t make them look good in the eyes of their Facebook fans or Twitter followers for a start.

Cheap won’t make you cheerful

If you take a few minutes to look around the web, you’ll soon find lots of people offering to write ‘high quality’ articles for a few pounds or dollars. You’d be much better off saving up those few pounds until you can afford a good copywriter. One great article is worth so much more in content marketing terms than 20 poorly written pieces.

Google is wise to poor content so any investment you make in below par writing is likely to end up hurting your rankings rather than improving them.

The same goes for online videos. A poorly executed production isn’t likely to get shared online and may just linger amongst the cobwebs in a dark corner of YouTube.

DIY dangers

Many people opt to write or record their own content. This can have many of the same drawbacks as outsourcing it cheaply. Every piece of content you put out reflects on your business. You don’t see High Street chains putting hand-written sale posters in their windows.

If you’re not a good writer or don’t know your way around making videos then choose someone with experience in these things and you’ll reap the rewards.

Social sharing

As well as getting your business noticed, content marketing is also about getting people to share your articles or videos via social media.

It’s well known now that Google is taking social media factors into account in its SEO algorithm. A bad video or blog post is high unlikely to get many shares when there is already so much great content out there.

People have been saying “Content is King” for many years and it’s never been truer than it is now. High quality content is a must for successful content marketing. Trying to cut corners is simply a false economy.
